Young Cricketer Mahika Gaur Makes History Playing for Two National Teams

Mahika Gaur started playing for the international cricket team when she was just 12 years old. But on Friday, she made history by playing for England this time. In a T20I match against Sri Lanka, she was part of the team. She’s a clever left-arm bowler.

On her big day, Mahika also got her first wicket in international cricket by getting Chamari Athapaththu out. But if it hadn’t rained, she might have taken more wickets.

England batted first and scored 186 runs. Danielle Wyatt and Alice Capsey scored the most runs. When Sri Lanka was trying to chase the target, they were at 55/3 in 6 overs when the rain stopped the game. England won by 12 runs using the DLS method.

After the match, England’s captain Heather Knight praised Mahika, who is 6ft 3 inches tall. She said, “Mahika was amazing in her first game. She had to bowl at the end of the innings because of the rain, and she did it perfectly. Her height gives her late swing, which is a great skill.”

Mahika looks up to MS Dhoni and Mitchell Starc, and she’s already on her way to becoming a great fast bowler. But she also dreams of finishing games like Mahi (MS Dhoni) someday.

Who is Mahika Gaur?

Mahika was born in Reading in the south of England. She decided to become a professional cricket player after watching an IPL match in Jaipur in 2011. It was a match between the Rajasthan Royals and the Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals), and the Australian spinner Shane Warne, who played for the Royals, left a big impression on her.

She said, “I was practicing bowling in the garden. I think my dad was surprised that I could bowl properly without breaking any rules. He used to be a left-arm bowler in college but didn’t get to pursue cricket. When he saw that I had talent, he supported me all the way.”

When Mahika’s family moved to Dubai, she started training at the ICC Academy and met Chaya Mughal, who would later become the captain of the UAE cricket team. Mahika shared, “The first time I went to the ICC Academy, she was training inside, and the coach, Adnan Sabri, told me I could bowl to her. I was nervous and bowled some easy deliveries, but she was calmly defending them. She was the first person I bowled to there, and I was really impressed to learn that she was part of the UAE national team.”

Since her debut for England, Mahika has played in 20 T20I matches and taken a total of 10 wickets, with her best performance being 3 wickets for 21 runs.
