Yankees expected to bring Aaron Boone back after finishing with worst record since 1992, per report

The New York Yankees are poised to keep manager Aaron Boone despite ending with their poorest record since 1992, according to SNY. Boone has one year left on his contract, and captain Aaron Judge has openly supported him several times over the years. That’s the kind of person you want on your side.

SNY has provided further information:

Per league sources, Boone is expected back with the Yankees next season.

It is still being determined exactly when or how the Yankees will finalize or announce that. Technically, no action needs to be taken, as Boone is under contract for next season. At this point, the only way Boone’s fate could change is if those (organizational meetings later this week) somehow go so sideways that they end in a surprise firing. No one expects that to happen.

Boone, 50, has finished his sixth season as Yankees manager, and this is the first time the team has missed the playoffs under his leadership. The Yankees went 82-80 and finished fourth, extending their winning run to 31 seasons. They were also outscored by 25 runs. The Yankees desperately need a new viewpoint and new ideas.

“He’s got a good feel for the clubhouse, with the 100-win seasons and the things he’s done,” Judge said on Sunday to MLB.com. “He’s simply a good communicator.” He can hold men accountable. If he notices something he does not like, he will notify you in the office. He’s really been a fantastic manager year after year. I’m looking forward to spending more time with him.”

The Yankees are 509-361 (.585) in Boone’s six seasons and have won two AL East championships (2019 and 2022). They haven’t won a pennant since 2009, and their 14-year drought is the second longest in team history, after only the 18-year hiatus from 1903 to 20. The Yankees are certain to make a change this summer, but it appears that it will not be the manager.
