‘We aren’t speaking about them,’ says Xhaka
Arsenal has been comfortably sitting on top of the Premier League charts for several weeks now. However, the defending champions have come back to haunt the Gunners. Despite having a game in hand, Arsenal just holds three points ahead of Man City.
Manchester City is yet to face Arsenal in the league this year. However, this Wednesday, City has the chance to defeat Arsenal and become lead leaders. Xhaka claims that Manchester City is no threat to Arsenal. He continues saying that the Gunners will be focused on winning their first league title since the 2003-04 season rather than worrying about City.
WHAT THEY SAID:
After losing points as Arsenal drew against Brentford, Swiss midfielder Xhaka said, “If we are honest, we don’t speak about them [City]. We are looking at ourselves, game by game. We didn’t win [against Brentford], we took one point. And Wednesday is big – for them, for us. So, let’s see.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE:
Arsenal is about to take on Man City, with a harsh mood, however. The Gunners were let down by a goal from Ivan Toney which was clearly offside but VAR failed to recognize the fact.
However, referee chief, Howard Webb later apologized for the mistake on their part. “We are disappointed because what we hear is that the blocker was offside, where we have got our player. I don’t know why they change the rules weekend by weekend. But it’s the referee’s decision not to give the offside, our decision to mark the players, the runners. We didn’t do it and you concede a goal like this.”
WHAT NEXT?
Despite showing great signs throughout the season but they have failed to grab a win in any of their last three outings. Thus, when City comes calling, Arteta will be eager to establish winning momentum.
