Weghorst explains why he touched the historic ‘This is Anfield’ sign

Wout Weghorst was spotted lifting his hand and touching the ‘THIS IS ANFIELD’ sign which is a pre-match custom for Liverpool players.

It is a sacred custom at Liverpool as players tend to touch the sign as a superstition before stepping onto the field.

Manchester United supporters, however, deny any such importance of the sign. Thus, when Weghorst touched it, the fans went crazy over the situation. Weghorst made things worse as he revealed his childhood admiration for the Merseyside outfit.

What did Weghorst have to say?

Since then, the Striker has come out to apologize for his actions and claimed that he just wanted to ‘wind up’ his Dutch teammate, Virgil Van Dijk.

He wrote on his Instagram, “Normally I never react on media topics, but for this one, it’s worth it because you amazing United fans are important to me. So, I just want to clarify the video that is doing the rounds.”

“From the national team, I know that Virgil always touches that sign and I went to stop him touching it to try and wind him up before the game. As a child, I always supported FC Twente, and as a proud player now for Manchester United, my dedication to this incredible club can never be questioned.

“Sunday was a terrible day for all of us. We are putting everything into making it right in the next weeks. We will bounce back together and achieve our aims this season!”

To take a funny side on the incident, Van Dijk didn’t even notice Weghorst touching the sign.
