Why Jets trade for Vikings’ Kirk Cousins makes sense after Aaron Rodgers injury.
A broken Achilles tendon destroyed star quarterback Aaron Rodgers’ season, and the New York Jets’ Super Bowl hopes after only four plays of his debut in the regular season. Zach Wilson, the former second-overall selection who has been benched more times than New York football fans care to recall, is now the team’s starting quarterback. The Jets managed to defeat the AFC East favorites Bills in the season opener and win in overtime, maybe largely as a result of Josh Allen’s three interceptions for the Buffalo Bills.
With 140 yards of completion on two-thirds of his attempts, a score, and an interception, Zach Wilson was adequate. His overall passing grade was 81.4. The Jets prevailed on Monday Night Football, but as long as Zach Wilson remains the starting quarterback, it isn’t easy to consider the squad even a postseason contender. That was really one of Wilson’s best games at center, which is hard to believe. The former BYU quarterback has a lifetime passer rating of 71.2, and only four of his 23 career outings (22 starts) have resulted in a touchdown pass while remaining interception-free. None of those matches featured multiple touchdowns.
The Jets have all the necessary components to compete at the highest level, thanks to running back Breece Hall, wide receiver Garrett Wilson, and a strong defense. Only their star quarterback is no longer with them. Is a trade necessary? Kirk Cousins, the quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, is one name being bandied about by insiders.
The Vikings are 0-2 to start the 2023 season after an unexpected 13-4 finish the previous year. Their 11 one-point victories in 2022, which set a record, have suddenly turned into defeats of three and six points as luck and momentum finally caught up with them. Although a deficit of 0-2 is hardly insurmountable, what if Minnesota has a 0-3 or 0-4 start? Only six teams have ever lost their opening three games and advanced to the postseason in NFL history. After going 0-4 to start the season, only one team has advanced.
In the coming weeks, one or two more defeats may cause the Vikings to contemplate punting on their starting quarterback. After this season, Cousins will be an unrestricted free agent, and Minnesota is unlikely to offer him a multiyear agreement to the 35-year-old.
