Who is the “Most Underpaid Athlete” in Sports? As Per Dan Patrick
The NFL’s running back salaries have been a big talking point lately, and one player, in particular, has caught the attention of sports analyst Dan Patrick – Derrick Henry from the Tennessee Titans. According to Patrick, Derrick Henry is the most underpaid athlete in all of pro sports.
Patrick passionately pointed out on his show, Dan Patrick Show, that Henry’s contributions on the field far outweigh his earnings of $42 million in his entire career. For instance, he compared Henry to Chase Daniel, a backup quarterback who hasn’t played much but has made a lot more money. It just doesn’t seem fair.
The reason behind Patrick’s strong opinion is Henry’s incredible importance to the Titans. He believes that, apart from Patrick Mahomes, no other NFL player has been as crucial to their team as Derrick Henry in recent years. When Henry was at his best, running for an impressive 1,800 yards, he became the backbone of the Titans.
“You want somebody who should really be upset. Derrick Henry. He might be the most underpaid athlete in all of sports. He has made $42 million in his career. Chase Daniel, back-up QB, hasn’t played in a meaningful game in his career has made, $42 million.”

Henry’s stats back up Patrick’s claims. In 2022, he led the entire NFL with an incredible 349 carries and rushed for 1,538 yards while scoring 13 touchdowns. Even in 2021, when he faced some injuries and played only eight games, he still managed to score ten touchdowns.
Over his career, Henry has proven himself as a workhorse, carrying the Titans and showing his value time and time again. With a total of 7,101 rushing yards on 1,464 carries, it’s clear that he’s an essential player for the team.
But here’s the catch – Henry is now in the final year of his four-year contract, which is worth $50 million. After that, he’ll become a free agent, meaning he can choose to play for any team that offers him a contract. This has raised questions about whether the Titans will recognize his true worth and reward him with a fair deal or if he’ll continue to be undervalued.
As fans, we can only hope that Derrick Henry’s hard work, dedication, and incredible performance will be recognized and rewarded in the right way. He truly deserves to be appreciated for his outstanding contributions to the NFL and the Tennessee Titans.
