Where is the 2023 Joburg Open being played?
The 2023 Joburg Open will be contested at the Houghton Golf Course in Johannesburg from November 23 to November 26. The Sunshine Tour hosts the tournament, which is co-sanctioned by the DP World Tour.
The Joburg Open will be held at the Houghton Golf Course, as it was last year. The 18-hole golf course, which measures 7241 yards, is regarded as one of the best in South Africa. The par 72 course opened in 1926 and was regarded as the greatest parkland course in Johannesburg at the time.
A.M. Copland, the principal course architect, designed the course. The South African Open was played on this course eight times between 1951 and 1992. Between 1996 and 2004, the course also hosted the Alfred Dunhill Championship.
Houghton just underwent comprehensive rehabilitation with Jack Nicklaus’ design group for a new layout in a recent drastic overhaul to the course. The club stated regarding the new layout:
“The new Houghton design is not overly long, especially given the rarified air of the Highveld.” To defend the golf course from longer hitters, strategically placed bunkers have been employed extensively to snag errant drives, making club selection critical. To retain the course’s character, the new greens have been shaped with rolling undulations and modest slopes.”
The par four 12th hole and the par three 7th hole are the most famous holes on the Joburg Open course.
