When Jon Rahm passed ‘judgement’ on LIV Golfers taking spaces at DP World Tour event without ‘interest’
LIV Golf has been extensively linked to Jon Rahm. According to reports, the Spanish golfer is close to signing a contract with the Saudi-funded series.
Rahm is one of the only players who has neither openly criticized nor praised LIV Golf since the series’ debut. Nonetheless, he has regularly expressed his thoughts and made comments on the series.
Rahm passed judgment on PGA Tour players who joined LIV Golf last year at the BMW PGA Championship, a DP World Tour event. While those players were banned from the American Tour, they were allowed to compete on the DP World Tour event to earn World Ranking points and secure their spot in majors for the following year.
In an interview with the Golf Channel, Rahm expressed dissatisfaction with some of the LIV players competing in the tournament. He also chastised them for taking the places of worthy golfers.
Because some of these players were in a high position when they were permitted to compete at the 2022 BMW PGA Championship, some DP World Tour golfers who were vying for a berth lost out.
Rahm had this to say about the LIV golfers:
“I am not entirely happy that they are here. What I don’t understand is some players that have never shown any interest in the European Tour, have never shown any interest in playing this event, being given an opportunity just because they can get world ranking points and hopefully make majors next year.”
Rahm cited a buddy, Alfred Garcia-Heredia, who missed out on the field due to the LIV golfers. He stated:
“As an example, a dear buddy of mine is now the #1 person on the entry list. It doesn’t bother me, but it irritates me that someone who has participated in over 20 DP World events this year cannot be given the opportunity to compete in a flagship event because some individuals who have earned it, to some level, are being given the opportunity when they couldn’t care less about the event. They have no idea. They are unconcerned. They are unaware of the event’s history.”
When discussing the LIV golfers, the Spaniard avoided using any names. Rahm also stated that he had no objections to players like Sergio Garcia, Ian Poulter, and Lee Westwood competing in the tournament because they had spent their entire lives playing on the DP World Tour before joining LIV Golf.
