When does the MLS transfer window open for 2023?
MLS and European leagues don’t align perfectly despite overlapping. Although MLS clubs can deal with each other, they can complete transfers from foreign leagues only during a specific time.
When is the MLS transfer window of 2023?
The first MLS transfer window began on the 31st of January and will run until the 24th of April.
However, the clubs are allowed to enjoy another brief window from July 5 to August 2. During this period, clubs often go all out for marquee players from Europe which often tend to exceed salary limits.
How do MLS transfer windows work?
MLS clubs are allowed to present a list of seven players from a foreign league. It’s called a “discovery list” that allows teams to reserve players that they aim to sign in the future. The list can include a maximum of seven players and have the liberty to add or remove players when they wish to.
It’s obvious that when multiple teams add a certain player to their lists, chaos is inevitable. However, in case two teams file requests on the same day, the team with the lowest point-per-game ratio in the ongoing season is handed the opportunity to reserve the rights for the player.
By using General Allocation Money, clubs are free to exchange discovery list players for $50,000.
