What is the next competition for Coco Gauff? Everything you need to know about the US Open champion’s itinerary for the rest of the 2023 season
The WTA Finals in Cancun are Coco Gauff’s next competition. The American recently lost in the semifinals of the China Open and was set to participate in the Zhengzhou Open before withdrawing due to a shoulder issue.
Gauff has had an outstanding 2023 season, winning 49 of her 63 singles wins. During the American hard-court season, the 19-year-old improved her game, winning the Citi Open before claiming her first WTA 1000 title at the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.
Gauff then won her most important championship to date, the US Open, defeating Aryna Sabalenka in the final. As a result, she became the youngest American winner of the New York Major since Serena Williams in 1999. Gauff’s run saw her reach a career-high singles rating of World No. 3 in the process.
The American then participated in the China Open, where she advanced to the semifinals with victories against Ekaterina Alexandrova, Petra Martic, Veronika Kudermetova, and Maria Sakkari. In the process, she established a 16-match victory run, the longest for any woman this season.
Gauff’s run at the China Open came to an end in the semifinals as she was defeated 6-2, 6-3 by Iga Swiatek. The American was slated to participate as the top seed at the Zhengzhou Open the following week. She withdrew from the competition, though, owing to a shoulder issue.
As a consequence, Coco Gauff will compete in the WTA Finals in Cancun. She will compete in the season-ending championships for the second time. The American is the event’s third seed, so it will be intriguing to watch how she does.
Coco Gauff lost every match at the WTA Finals 2022
Coco Gauff made her WTA Finals debut at last year’s event in Fort Worth, Texas, as the fourth seed.
She was eliminated after losing all of her group-stage matches. Iga Swiatek, Daria Kasatkina, and eventual winner Caroline Garcia defeated Gauff.
Coco Gauff also played in the women’s doubles event alongside Jessica Pegula at the 2022 WTA Finals. The pair’s fate was identical to that of the Americans in the singles tournament, as they lost all of their group-stage matches.
