What became of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy’s golf league? Current status investigated
The Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy League (TGL) has been postponed by one year after its Florida Arena was badly damaged last week. The league, which was supposed to begin in January 2024, will now start in 2025.
TGL is a tech-infused league that will debut next year. The first season was supposed to have six teams, each with four notable golfers. They were supposed to participate in Palm Beach State College’s SoFi Center, a 250,000-square-foot arena under construction.
The dome of the SoFi Center was deflated earlier this week owing to the collapse of the temporary power system and backup equipment utilized for construction. The air-supported dome was damaged, but there were no injuries or significant effects on technology.
The TGL issued an official statement on its website on Monday, November 20, announcing the one-year postponement. Even if the repairs were finished in a few months, the statement claims that it would have an impact on the schedules of players and broadcasters. As a result, it was decided that postponing the league by a year was the best option.
“This decision came after reviewing short-term solutions, potential construction timelines, player schedules, and the primetime sports television calendar,” according to the press release.
According to the statement, they have begun adjusting the plans and schedules and are hopeful that the delay will only improve the product’s delivery.
TMRW Sports Co-Founder and CEO Mike McCarley stated that while they were frustrated with the delay, they were glad that no one was wounded. He also expressed gratitude to the players, Palm Beach State College, and business partners for their assistance.
According to TGLGolf.com, McCarley stated:
“Their steadfast belief in the success of TGL and their alignment with the decision to postpone the inaugural season will allow us to regroup and return at our preferred time on the sports calendar.”
Tiger Woods acknowledged his belief in the product and remarked that he was looking forward to it, given the momentum it had gained over the previous year.
“Although the events of last week will force us to make adjustments to our timelines, I’m fully confident that this concept will be brought to life by our great, committed players,” he told reporters.
Rory McIlroy had mixed sentiments over the league’s postponement. While frustrating, he said that it will allow them to recover and concentrate in order to return stronger the next year.
