Wayne Rooney on Messi scoring 5 goals in a Champions League match
Rooney praises Messi as he recalls a tweet from 2012.
It was 11 years ago when the Messi’s one of the most historic games took place in the Champions League. Barcelona humbled Bayer Leverkusen 7-1. Messi became the first player to score 5 goals in a single Champions League game. Apart from his five, two goals came from Christian Tello.
His feat was repeated in 2014, as Brazilian striker Luiz Adriano went on to find the back of the net five times against BATE Borisov, as he equaled Messi’s record.
Rooney’s reaction
While Messi scored 5 goals in the 2012 Champions League round of 16 ties against Bayer Leverkusen. Rooney tweeted, “Messi is a joke. For me, the best ever.”
Since then, the former English striker has stayed true to his words. When Messi’s Argentina knocked out Croatia in the World Cup semifinals, Rooney retweeted his earlier tweet.
He wrote, “Nothing has changed. ?????”
