Washington Commanders Sign Veteran Kicker Following Surprising Release by Lions
The Detroit Lions made a surprising move last week when they decided to let go of their kicker, Michael Badgley. This unexpected release was aimed at creating space on the roster for Denzel Mims, a new wide receiver acquired from the New York Jets.
But it didn’t take long for the Washington Commanders to spot an opportunity. They swiftly went after the experienced kicker, Michael Badgley, who had a strong performance in the 2022 season.
According to reports from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Washington Commanders wasted no time and officially signed Michael Badgley on Monday, just a few days before their training camp began. This signing means Badgley will now compete with the current kicker, Joey Slye, for the starting spot in the 2023 season.

During his time in Detroit, Badgley showcased his skills, successfully making 20 out of 24 field goals in the 2022 season. His sudden release by the Lions surprised many in the football community.
Joey Slye, 27, the incumbent kicker for the Commanders, is entering his third season with the team. Last year, he demonstrated his accuracy by converting 25 out of 30 kicks (83.3%) in 17 games.
As we eagerly await the regular season, all eyes will be on the training camp as Badgley and Slye compete to become the starting kicker for the Washington Commanders.
