Washington Commanders Sign Jacoby Brissett as Backup Quarterback
The Washington Commanders are shaking things up in their quarterback room, as they prepare for the upcoming season. The Commanders are reportedly signing veteran Jacoby Brissett, according to a report by ESPN’s Dianna Russini.
While the terms of the deal have not been disclosed, Brissett’s signing is expected to provide some much-needed experience to the Commanders’ quarterback group. The team’s head coach, Ron Rivera, has already endorsed Sam Howell, the Commanders’ 2022 fifth-round pick, as the starter heading into training camp. However, Rivera also acknowledged earlier this year that the team needed to bring in a veteran backup.
Brissett seems to fit the bill perfectly, as a seasoned presence at a reasonable price. With 48 NFL starts under his belt, Brissett has shown that he can step in and do the job when needed. Last season with the Cleveland Browns, he passed for over 2,600 yards with 12 touchdowns and six interceptions in 11 starts.
In addition to his on-field experience, Brissett has also spent time with some of the game’s great quarterbacks, including Tom Brady and Andrew Luck. This knowledge and wisdom are sure to be invaluable to Howell as he continues to develop.
While the starting job is Howell’s to lose, Brissett’s arrival makes it clear that the Commanders are committed to providing their young quarterback with the support he needs to succeed. With Brissett in the mix, the Commanders appear to be well-positioned at the quarterback position heading into the upcoming season.
