Warriors coach Steve Kerr emphasizes the importance of Chris Paul’s leadership in the wake of the team’s disappointing playoff run last year
The Golden State Warriors’ decision to sign veteran point guard Chris Paul, 38, this summer drew criticism from a lot of quarters. It seems highly doubtful that Paul, who is perhaps the finest point guard in the NBA, will get along with Steph Curry, given his desire for possession of the ball. Steve Kerr, the Warriors coach, maintains that Paul is still the ideal addition to Golden State.
In a recent interview with 95.7 The Game, Kerr discussed how Golden State was without Paul’s experienced presence and leadership. Paul ought to assist in resolving the team’s chemistry problems, which hampered them throughout the previous campaign until their heartbreaking second-round playoff defeat, Kerr continued.
“He’s the perfect fit for us right now because, frankly, I think we needed leadership.”
“This gang lacked a leader. Since our squad was so young the previous year, we never truly clicked. We never really got our rhythm in the playoffs, but I think we gave it a decent shot.”

According to Steve Kerr, the Warriors are a more balanced team entering this season
Steve Kerr discussed point guard Cory Joseph and big man Dario Saric, two more recently experienced additions to Golden State, in the same interview. In addition to providing leadership for the club, Kerr stated that Saric, Joseph, and Chris Paul are all effective players:
“I believe (GM) Mike Dunleavy and his staff realized going into this season that we needed more seasoned leadership. We recruited three amazing pros and very, really talented players in Chris, Dario Saric, and Cory Joseph.”
“Dario is a fantastic player, and Cory has been a rock-solid point guard in this league for almost a decade, but obviously Chris is a Hall of Famer.”
Kerr continued, “The Warriors are a much more cohesive team going into the 2023–24 NBA season as a result of their offseason changes.”
“So, it seems like this group is more capable of initiating something early and gaining some momentum, and it also feels like they are more balanced.”
The previous season, Golden State finished 44-38 (sixth in the Western Conference) and lost 4-2 to the Los Angeles Lakers in the West semifinals. But the squad did win the 2022 NBA title the year before. The new players the Warriors have added may help them contend for the championship again in 2024.
