Vijay Shankar was born on January 26, 1991, in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. Vijay Shankar started playing cricket with his father and brother, who also played club cricket. Shankar first opted to bowl as a spinner but to get selection in the Tamil Nadu team he transform his bowling style to medium-pace bowling as there were many spinners already on the team. Vijay completed his education at Modern Senior Secondary School, Nangainallur, and Guru Nanak College, Chennai in Tamil Nadu.
