Valverde reacts to the disallowed goal against Barcelona
Muniain’s equalizer against Barcelona overturned by VAR
Last night, Xavi’s Barcelona managed to get yet another 1-0 win as they move forward towards a La Liga title. Despite not being convincing in most games of the season, the Blaugrana have been able to grind through the win each time.
However, yesterday’s math could have ended in a draw if Athletic Bilbao’s equalizer was not disallowed. It was Iker Muniain who scored at San Mames but it was termed a handball by the VAR.
Former Catalan Boss, Ernesto Valverde argued about the decision in the post-match conference, despite it being a clear hand ball from Muniain.
What did Valverde say about the disallowed goal?
Bilbao boss, Valverde said, “It’s not normal that no one on the field sees nor protests anything, but you disallow the goal because some guy saw it from a telescope far, far away.”
“It’s not a question on whether the ball touched his shoulder or not. It’s a question of what football is. It’s silly that someone has a telescope that records what’s going on from a far, and takes decisions, even though no one on the pitch saw it.
“VAR is supposed to be there for correcting blatant mistakes: Whether a ball goes in or not, clear penalties, clear mistakes… but to call the referee because a player barely rubs his shoulder with the ball is absurd.”
As per the rule book, any incident of the ball touching the hand during an attack is deemed an immediate foul. Moreover, VAR is there for those incidents which go outside the vision of the referee.
