Valve Announces Next-Gen Steam Deck Won’t Be Released for “A Few Years”
It’s been a year since the Steam Deck launched, and while it was a significant leap forward in handheld gaming, people are already asking about its successor. Valve developers Lawrence Yang and Pierre-Loup Griffais recently spoke with Rock Paper Shotgun about the Steam Deck’s first year and what’s in store for the future.
Updates and Game Compatibility:
The developers discussed the updates and improvements made to the console over the past year, including the significantly increased number of playable games. They plan to continue updates and expand the list of compatible games.
No Next-Gen Steam Deck Yet:
When asked about the possibility of a next-generation Steam Deck, Yang confirmed that a significant upgrade in hardware would not be happening for a few years. Valve wants to test the limits of what the current hardware can do before making any major changes.
Availability:
At launch, the Steam Deck was difficult to obtain due to limited availability, but the wait time has since decreased. It’s now possible to buy a Steam Deck and other next-generation consoles without waiting in virtual queues for hours.
Impressive Game Library:
The Steam Deck’s ability to run a wide range of PC games is impressive, with the announcement that even The Last of Us will be playable on the device when the PC port of the first game launches later this month. The handheld PC’s capabilities have surpassed expectations for many who have been playing handheld games since the Game Boy era.
While some may be eagerly anticipating a next-gen Steam Deck, Valve developers have confirmed that significant hardware upgrades are still years away. In the meantime, the current version of the Steam Deck will continue to receive updates and improvements, expanding its library of playable games.
