Thierry Henry to coach USMNT?
Thierry Henry to return to managerial duty
The USMNT is currently searching for a new manager to lead the squad after Gregg Berhalter’s contract ran out. Apart from that, US Soccer is also looking for replacements after sporting director Earnie Stewart and general manager Brian McBride left earlier this year.
Could Arsenal legend Thierry Henry be the man for the job?
Arsenal legend, Henry on Wednesday hinted to be up for the coaching role at USMNT and mentioned that he is open to returning to coaching.
During the Champions League postgame podcast, Henry said, “Do I know the players? Yeah, I do know the players. Do I know the league? Yeah, I do know the league.”
After his playing career, the Frenchman took on coaching duties for MLS side Montreal Impact. He was also the assistant coach for the Belgian National Soccer team.
As of now, Henry is seeking the right moment to be back as a manager. He mentioned that he wasn’t looking to be an assistant anymore when asked by Roberto Martinez who leads Portugal now. However, he is keen to be the main man to lead a team.
He stated: “Roberto Martinez went to coach Portugal and I’m not going with him. Being a No 2 is no longer something I would like to do. Massive respect for the boss, he gave me an opportunity when no one else did. I’d like to have a crack (at management) again.”
U.S. currently have a bunch of exciting talent in their pool that proved their worth at the World Cup. The group successfully made it to the last 16 after qualifying out of the group consisting of Wales, Iran, and England.
Henry demands a clear plan
Henry said, “What’s the plan? What’s the philosophy? What do you want to be? When you ask yourself these questions, you are going to find out eventually the answers. And it’s not because you’re going to host the competition that you’re going to go far automatically. We’ve seen that it’s not easy to do that. We’ve seen some big teams (struggle) at home.”
U.S. Soccer has currently placed Anthony Hudson as the interim manager. In the meanwhile, the federation is on the lookout for a new sporting director who will finalize the new manager.
As a player, Henry played for New York Red Bulls making 122 appearances. During this time, he scored 51 goals in the MLS.
