The Play of the Game issue in Overwatch 2 highlighted by Kiriko’s impressive performance

Overwatch 2 is a popular multiplayer game where players compete against each other in teams. At the end of each game, a feature called Play of the Game highlights the most impactful play of the match. However, a recent video by a player shows that the algorithm behind the system needs improvement.

What is Overwatch 2’s Play of the Game System?
The Play of the Game feature is supposed to showcase the game-changing action that had the most significant impact on the game. The clip opens with a Highlight Intro of the selected character and presents a highlight moment from the player’s perspective. It can be a multi-kill action, the impactful use of an Ultimate ability, or even an environmental kill.
Kiriko’s Play of the Game Snub:

In a recent match, a player known as aQuarterChub played Kiriko and killed the entire enemy team during Overtime, allowing their team to win the game. Despite the incredible feat, Kiriko’s action was not selected as the Play of the Game. The clip that was featured instead was a multi-kill action caused by an Ultimate ability.
The Problem with Overwatch 2’s Play of the Game System:
The issue with the Play of the Game system is that it doesn’t consider the impact of each player’s contribution. In the case of Kiriko’s play, the kills were too spread out to be featured in the Play of the Game. The kills occurred over a 30-second timeframe, while the Play of the Game clips usually last less than 20 seconds.
Overwatch 2‘s Play of the Game feature is meant to recognize players who performed well and highlight the best action of the match. However, as shown in the video, the algorithm behind the system needs improvement. While multi-kill actions caused by Ultimate abilities are impressive, they shouldn’t be the only factor considered in the selection process. The Play of the Game system should take into account the impact of each player’s contribution to the match to truly showcase the game-changing moments that occurred.
