The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) franchise is not just a cartoonish, family-friendly brand. It also has darker and more violent roots in the original comics. “The Last Ronin,” a popular and gritty 2020 comic spin-off, will now be turned into a big action-adventure video game.

The Game Details

In an interview with Polygon, Doug Rosen, senior vice president for games and emerging media at Paramount Global, confirmed that the upcoming third-person action role-playing game will be comparable to the recent God of War entries. The game will star the last remaining turtle in a war-ravaged wasteland, authentic to “The Last Ronin” comic series. The lone surviving turtle will be the protagonist, with no sign of the other turtles or Splinter. The game will not be a child-friendly adventure, but rather, an adult-oriented game.

Future Plans

Rosen believes that there are opportunities for multiple TMNT games aimed at both young and more mature age groups. TMNT’s owner, Paramount, will create content for each group, taking different approaches. For instance, TMNT villain Shredder will appear in Call of Duty.

Release Date and Platform

The game’s release date is not set, but it will take “a few years” to launch. Rosen did not disclose the studio that will develop the game nor the platform that it will be available.

TMNT fans can expect a dark and gritty game based on “The Last Ronin” comic series, similar to the popular God of War games. The game will be an adult-oriented adventure, and the protagonist will be the last surviving turtle in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. However, fans will have to wait a few years for the game’s release, and there is no word yet on the development studio or platform.
