The general manager of the Dodgers explains why Bob Gerren was removed from his position as bench coach

The Los Angeles Dodgers recently made a surprising announcement regarding their coaching staff, revealing that Danny Lehmann would be replacing Bob Geren as the team’s bench coach. Geren had been with the Dodgers for all seven years of manager Dave Roberts’ tenure, serving as a mentor and right-hand man to the first-time manager. However, the club has now decided to realign duties and responsibilities within the coaching staff, with Geren transitioning into a new role as the “major league field coordinator.”

According to Dodgers General Manager Brandon Gomes, the realignment is aimed at making the coaching staff as effective and efficient as possible. Geren will still be a part of the staff and will continue to handle several of his usual responsibilities, such as scheduling, keeping up to date with rules, and more. Meanwhile, Lehmann, who has already made a significant impact with his work on defensive alignments and with the pitching staff, will take on more responsibilities as the new bench coach.

There are generally two types of bench coaches in Major League Baseball. Some serve as mentors to inexperienced managers, like Geren, who had previously managed the A’s. Others are young protégés of experienced managers, such as Don Mattingly with Joe Torre in New York or Alex Cora with AJ Hinch in Houston. The latter seems to be more in line with the relationship between Roberts and the 37-year-old Lehmann, who is a former catcher and up-and-coming coach.

Lehmann was drafted out of Rice University and spent seven years in the Twins farm system, reaching Triple-A in four straight seasons but never making it to the big leagues as a player. He joined the Dodgers coaching staff in 2015, one year after retiring as a player. With his experience and success within the organization, the Dodgers believe that Lehmann is the right person to take over as bench coach and help guide the team toward success.

The Dodgers’ coaching shuffle is a bold move but one that the club believes will pay off in the long run. With Geren still a part of the coaching staff and Lehmann taking on new responsibilities, the team is confident that they have the right people in place to achieve their goals. Whether the realignment will lead to a successful season remains to be seen. Still, the Dodgers are optimistic about the future and believe that this coaching shuffle is the right move for their organization.
