Tennis: Nick Kyrgios admits assaulting his ex-girlfriend, escapes conviction
The common assault charge against controversial Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios has been dismissed, even though he acknowledged punching his former partner.
Kyrgios entered a plea of guilty to the offense in ACT Magistrates court following the inability of his lawyers to have the accusation dropped due to his mental health difficulties.
However, magistrate Beth Campbell dismissed the charge and concluded that there was no need to enter a conviction.
Kyrgios had earlier limped onto the court while using crutches, accompanied by his mother and his girlfriend at the time, Costeen Hatzi.
Kyrgios had knocked Passari into an argument
The world No. 20 reportedly knocked his ex-partner Chiara Passari to the ground on January 10, 2021, during a quarrel, according to the court.
When Kyrgios knocked Ms. Passari over, she was blocking the door of an Uber and prevented him from leaving.
She was lying on the ground when he stood over her and said, “Seriously.” Ms. Passari experienced a shoulder ache and grazing on her knee.
While Ms. Passari requested Kyrgios to get out of the car and calm down, he yelled at her, “Leave me the f*** alone” and “just f***ing piss off.”
The couple got back together after the incident, but Ms. Passari didn’t disclose the incident until 10 months had passed.
The maximum punishment for common assault is two years in prison.
Following an injury that forced him to withdraw from the Australian Open last month, Kyrgios is now recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his knee.
