Tennis-Alcaraz triumphs in Buenos Aires after overcoming injury
After a four-month injury break, Carlos Alcaraz won his tennis match on Wednesday, defeating Serbia’s Laslo Djere and advancing to the quarterfinals of the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires.
During a two-hour match on the Court Guillermo Vilas, the 19-year-old Spaniard displayed signs of ring tiredness before defeating Djere, the world No. 57.
World No. 2 Alcaraz expressed relief at winning his first victory of 2023 after learning he would face another Serb, Dusan Lajovic, in the round of eight.
“It’s a great feeling to win again,” the current US Open champion remarked.
“It’s been a long time without any competition and no matches, just recovering – finally I got my first win of 2023.”
“I’m really happy. I didn’t expect such a great atmosphere behind me. So a thank you to all the fans here – hopefully, I can keep going with this energy.”
His injury proved to be troublesome for him
Alcaraz hadn’t played since injuring a leg muscle at the Paris Masters in November, which prevented him from competing in the Australian Open and the start of the 2023 season.
After quickly winning the first set against Djere, he played well in the second set but missed several opportunities to break his opponent.
Instead, Djere took advantage of Alcaraz’s poor play to tie the match and force a third set.
Alcaraz, on the other hand, reacted forcefully, broke in the first game, and then again to lead 5-2 before serving out the match.
Lajovic, his opponent in the quarterfinals, defeated Argentina’s Camilo Ugo 6-3, 6-1 earlier on Wednesday to advance to the round of eight.
By overcoming Argentina’s Facundo Diaz on the other side of the draw, British second seed Cameron Norrie advanced to the quarterfinals.
After Tomas Etcheverry defeated Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena by scores of 4-6, 6-1, and 6-2, the Argentine will face Norrie in the quarterfinals.
