Temple University’s Men’s Basketball Coach Aaron McKie Steps Down
Temple University’s men’s basketball team is undergoing a change as Aaron McKie steps down as their head coach. The university announced on Monday that McKie will serve as a special adviser to the athletic department instead.
During his four-year tenure as head coach, McKie achieved a 52-56 overall record, with a 16-16 record this season. Unfortunately, the Owls were routed 84-54 by Cincinnati in the American Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinals, bringing an end to their season.
Despite the challenges, McKie expressed his appreciation for the opportunity to serve as head coach and wished the team and the university success moving forward. “Temple has been and always will be home for me, and I wish nothing but the best for Temple’s student-athletes and the University,” he said in a press release.
Before coaching, McKie was a star player for Temple from 1991-94, with an average of 17.9 points and 6.4 rebounds over three seasons. He was also a first-round draft pick for the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1994 NBA draft and played for 13 seasons in the league.
Although his best record as head coach was 17-12 in the 2021-22 season, McKie was unable to lead the Owls to postseason play. Temple Athletic Director Arthur Johnson expressed his gratitude towards McKie for his service to the program and the university, saying “Aaron has been a role model both as a student-athlete, a professional player, and as our coach, representing the university and the program in the finest manner.”
Despite the change, McKie’s dedication to Temple and its student-athletes remains strong as he moves into his new role as special adviser to the athletic department.
