Swedish Stud Ludvig Aberg is set to make a historic debut at the 2023 Ryder Cup.

Ludvig Aberg acknowledges that he started thinking about joining the Ryder Cup squad in late summer.

In May, he was playing college golf and earning the Haskins, Hogan, and Nicklaus postseason awards. He obtained his card through PGA Tour University and quickly built a reputation for himself on Tour, particularly with his ability off the tee. He won the European Masters earlier this month, putting a feather in his crown and punching his ticket to Italy.

Only five months ago, the 23-year-old Swedish prodigy was at college. When he tees off in the 2023 Ryder Cup at Marco Simone in Rome, Italy, on Friday, he will become the first golfer in history to participate in a Ryder Cup before making his major title debut.

“For me, all I tried to do was play good golf,” Aberg stated. “I probably wouldn’t have believed it if someone told me a couple of months ago that I’d be here playing a Ryder Cup.” It’s a dream come true for me to be here, and I’m looking forward to the next few days.”

When European captain Luke Donald named Aberg one of his six captain’s choices, he stated that Aberg “has the potential to be one of golf’s superstars.”

He became the Tour’s first player to acquire a card through PGA Tour University. He went on to finish fourth in four subsequent events, including a T-4 at the John Deere Classic.

Donald saw Aberg play at the Rocket Mortgage Classic in Detroit and was blown away by his skills. The captain encouraged the boy to travel across the pond to play some more. It landed him a spot on the team.

“It’s really cool the way that these last couple of months have panned out for me,” Aberg stated. “It’s been pretty intense, and I’m trying to embrace it.” I try to have fun with it. But, sure, it’s great to be here.”

Aberg is one of four Europeans making their Ryder Cup debuts, along with Nicolai Hojgaard, Robert MacIntyre, and Sepp Straka.

What does he expect from the first tee?

“I wish I had never gotten nervous,” Aberg said. “Obviously, anyone who plays golf, you know, feels the nerves at times.” Obviously, I do as well. And I expect to feel the same way on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of this week.

“There’s a lot of enthusiasm. It’s a foreshadowing of what’s to come, and I see it as something positive. It doesn’t have to, you know, have a negative impact on my conduct. It’s more of a gesture to demonstrate that I care. So I’m looking forward to experiencing those emotions again.”
