Steven Bergwijn claims his decision to join Ajax was ‘Perfect’
Steven Bergwijn insists that his move away from Tottenham to join Ajax was right for his career.
The Dutch winger became a record signing for Ajax as he joined for £26 million. He spent three seasons for the Spurs during which he struggled to get first-team action and scored just seven goals during his time.
Bergwijn has been exceptional for Ajax as he went on to score a hat trick in just his second game for the club against Groningen. His goal against Rangers in the Champions League group stages took his goal count to eight.
Despite having slowed down in terms of goal, the 25-year-old believes joining the Amsterdam outfit was the best choice.
What did Steven Bergwijn have to say?
While talking to Algemeen Dagblad, Bergwijn said, “I still think I made a perfect choice.”
Ajax has been going through a rough patch of form this season. Since Erik Ten Hag left, his successor Alfred Schreuder was given the sack as the club is placed 3rd in the league standings.
The Dutch winger has been under criticism for his poor form over the last few months. However, he insists that he is fine with not scoring as far as the team in winning games.
He said, “I’m used to it, the reviews fluctuate a lot- very black and white.”
“I’m the best when I score a lot, otherwise I can’t do anything about it. When things went well and I was sent things, I said, ‘watch out, if things go less later, everyone will hear that I’m not doing well’. I don’t listen to it.”
“I have never been a top scorer. All I came for is winning prizes. If I’m the top scorer later, that’s great. If not, I don’t care if we’re on the Museumplein. That is the most important.”
