Somalia Minister Suspends Sports Chairwoman For Embarrassing Incident At FISU 2023
Somalia’s sports Minister suspended chairwoman of sports Khadija Aden Dahir after the embarrassing viral video incident of the 100m race at FISU 2023.
Somalia’s Ministry of Youth and Sports took immediate action after runner Nasra Ali Abukar was trolled for her slowest 100m track race at the 2023 World University Games in Chengdu, China. Nasra Ali Abukar finished the 100m track race in 21.81 seconds and set the record for the slowest runner.
On Wednesday, Minister Mohamed Barre Mohamud released an official statement and confirmed that Nasra Ali is not an athlete runner. The Ministry also suspended the chairwoman Khadija Aden for “engaged in acts of abuse of power, nepotism, and defaming the name of the nation.”

The 100-meter race went viral after Somalia’s poor performance and finished the race 10 seconds far behind her fellow runners.
“The Ministry of Youth and Sports should step down. It’s disheartening to witness such an incompetent government,” in a post with over 65 million views. How could they select an untrained girl to represent Somalia in running? It’s truly shocking and reflects poorly on our country internationally.”
The ministry also found evidence in an investigation that there is no registered Somali University Sports Association without clarifying the connection to this incident.
