Serena Williams opens up after retirement, says: “I was actually not very happy at all”
When Serena Williams declared her intention to retire from tennis in August of last year, she stated that the 2022 US Open would be her final competition.
The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion revealed in a recent interview with CBS that she was still uncertain of her choice.
After defeating Danka Kovinic and subsequently World No. 2 Anett Kontaveit, Serena Williams was unmoved by the fact that she had played fewer matches overall at the 2022 US Open. But in the third round of the 2022 US Open, following a three-hour match, the 41-year-old fell to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic in her final match as a pro. The American legend fought hard and even managed to preserve five match points in an effort to change the outcome.
She is still uncertain about the decision to retirement
Now that Serena Williams’ career has ended in such a situation, she has admitted that she was depressed and said she would like to continue winning. Williams admitted that she was sad about “letting that match go” in an interview with Gayle King on CBS Mornings.
“I was actually not very happy at all. Just because of the result. I was there to keep going and to keep winning,” she said, “And yeah, it was more or less like, ‘I can’t believe I let that match go’ more than anything, you know.”
41-year-old, Sarena wondered how she might have been able to change the result of the game. “Obviously, it was a great moment and a great memory and I’ve never felt – I don’t feel like I’ve left anything, but I just felt like, ‘What could I have done better that day?”
