Sebastian Korda ousts 2-time Australian Open runner-up Daniil Medvedev
Sebastian Korda‘s 7-6 (7), 6-3, 7-6 (4) triumph against two-time runner-up Daniil Medvedev in the third round of the Australian Open on Friday night was the most recent in a string of victories by young American men over superior opponents at Melbourne Park.
The 29th-seeded Florida native Korda, who is 22 years old, is the son of Petr, the 1998 Australian Open champion.
By reaching the round of 16, he equaled his greatest Grand Slam competitive performance.
The United States men last won a Grand Slam championship 20 years ago, and this achievement comes after two other eye-catching victories by American players. Nadal, the top seed, was defeated on Wednesday by Mackenzie McDonald. Jenson Brooksby defeated No. 2 seed Casper Ruud on Thursday. It was now Korda’s chance to include his name on the list.
The majority of the points on this particular night in Rod Laver Arena were dictated by Korda, who volleyed with finesse and vigor while placing his strokes exactly where he wanted them to go.
The American won 7-6 (9/7), 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) as seventh seed Medvedev followed defending champion Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud out in the first week.
Russia’s Medvedev finished runner-up at the previous two Grand Slams in Melbourne, but his tournament ended in round three when he was defeated by Sebastian Korda.
The 10th seed Hubert Hurkacz of Poland will be Korda’s next opponent.
What did Korda say about his victory?
“I sort of knew what I had to do and I stuck with it even when I was going up and down with the emotions.”
“I’m thrilled right now, I played amazing,” said Korda.

a further boost for nine-time
