Seahawks’ Devon Witherspoon latest to rip Daniel Jones
Devon Witherspoon and the Seattle Seahawks defense dominated the New York Giants offense, notably tormenting Daniel Jones throughout the game. Witherspoon got two sacks and an interception return for a score, making him the first Seahawks player to do that in a game.
Witherspoon’s pick-six for a touchdown late in the third quarter effectively ruined the Giants’ comeback attempt and sparked a viral sideline interaction between Jones and head coach Brian Daboll.
The Seahawk’s rookie cornerback expertly read the route and scored 97 yards the opposite way. After the game, Witherspoon stated that it was simple to predict where Jones would go, which contributed to a franchise-record 11 sacks.
“We knew he liked to stare down his first target,” Witherspoon said after the game on NFL Network. “We were simply trusting the game plan that the coaches had laid out for us.” He had his back to the action, and a lot of people were winning one-on-one battles up front. We couldn’t have made the plays we did without them.”
Jones was sacked ten times and completed 27 of 34 for 203 yards and two interceptions (67.0 rating). The Seahawks defense recorded 11 sacks as a unit to control the battle in the trenches all night. Jones had three mistakes in the defeat (two interceptions and a fumble), his second game with zero touchdowns and three or more turnovers.
This isn’t the first time a player has criticized Jones this season. Jones was slammed by 49ers players last week after the Giants were defeated, stating he “didn’t want to throw the ball,” among other things.
This season, Jones has become the poster child for criticism. This does not appear to be changing anytime soon.
