Russell Westbrook surpassed Gary Payton on the all-time assist list of the NBA
Russell Westbrook, the Los Angeles Lakers guard, passed Gary Payton’s record on Monday night against the Brooklyn Nets.
He has leveled up to the 10th spot in the all-time assist list. Westbrook passed the Hall of Famer, Payton’s record while playing against the Brooklyn Nets. He scored 8,972 career assists and surpassed the former No. 10 assist record of 8,966, made by Gary Payton.
Though the Lakers went through a 121-104 loss against the Nets, Westbrook startled everyone with his outstanding performance. He completed the game with 17 points, 10 assists, and 8 rebounds. Securing the No. 10 spot and leaving the legend Payton behind, was truly a milestone for the player.
Westbrook’s reaction to this milestone
Amidst the loss Lakers were facing, Westbrook managed to perform well and break the record. He was grateful for his accomplishment.
Westbrook said, “I don’t take none of this game for granted since day one. I’m very blessed and grateful and thankful to go out and compete and I never cheat the game. I go out and compete every night, I do my job every single night regardless of all the things that are thrown at me. And it means a lot just from where I started to where I’m at. From where I grew up at to be sitting here and if someone would’ve told me 15 years ago that I’d be sitting here 10 top in assists, I’d look at them like they were crazy. I never dreamt of being in this position nor getting to the point to where I’m next to some of the greats. I’m just truly thankful and grateful the opportunity keep playing at the highest level and I don’t take any of it for granted.”
Westbrook has created top 10 league history alongside LeBron James and Chris Paul.
