Romero admits that he pulled Cucurella’s hair as an act of ‘revenge’
Spurs defender Cristian Romero was seen pulling Marc Cucurella’s hair during a 2-2 draw against Chelsea. The center-back has now apologized for his wrongdoing and admitted it was an act of revenge.
It was back in August when Chelsea hosted Spurs in a fiery London derby. It was Harry Kane to Spurs’ rescue as he scored a 96th-minute equalizer to grab a point.
A few minutes before the equalizer from Kane, Romero was involved in the controversial incident with Cucurella. While preparing to attack a cross from the corner, the Argentine pulled the Spaniard’s locks in a harsh manner. It took a VAR review to decide who was at fault.
Surprisingly, Romero was cleared of the charge without being booked. Later, VAR operator Mike Dean admitted that the decision was wrong. An on-field referee should have been on the monitor to review it himself.
The Apology from Romero
While speaking to The Times, Romero did admit to pulling Cucurella’s hair as an act of revenge for an earlier leg the Spaniard put in. However, he apologized and said the following:
“That was all a bit exaggerated. There was a bit of revenge because he’d injured me and I kept playing even though it was getting worse and I reacted badly.
“Of course, I shouldn’t have reacted like that and I apologize for what happened. But it’s the first time I’ve been involved in something like that. I hope it doesn’t happen again.”
Romero is currently injured and is likely to miss the next three games.
At the club level, he has made 17 appearances for Spurs in all competitions. Alongside, he played a crucial role in defense for Argentina as they won the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
