Remembering Fred Willis: NFL Fans Mourns Death of Former Running Back

It’s a sad day for the NFL community as we say goodbye to a former running back who made a big impact on the league. Fred Willis, a talented player in college football and the NFL, passed away at the age of 75. He leaves behind a legacy that will always be remembered.

Willis’ alma mater, Boston College, announced the news on Saturday giving some career highlights of his career- 

Fred Willis started his football journey at Marian high school in Framingham, where he showed incredible skill. In his final year, he ran an impressive 1,107 yards, becoming the all-time leading rusher for his team, the Eagles. He received many awards and honors for his outstanding performance including Bulger Lowe Award for the best player in New England in 1970. After graduating, Willis went on to play in college All-Star games, Senior Bowl, and Blue-Gray Game, catching the attention of professional football scouts.

In 1971, the Cincinnati Bengals picked Willis in the NFL Draft. He had a successful career, playing for both the Bengals and the Houston Oilers. Throughout his six years in the league, Willis ran for 2,831 yards and scored 18 touchdowns. He also caught 203 passes for 1,380 yards and five touchdowns. His skills and versatility made him a valuable player.

Football fans everywhere are feeling the loss of Fred Willis. Many took to social media to express their sadness. 

One fan wrote, “Saddened by the news that former #Bengals running back Fred Willis has passed away at 75. He was my favorite player when I first became a football fan,”
