Reason Why Spurs’ Not Going After Lakers’ Austin Reaves
The San Antonio Spurs have emerged as one of the most interesting teams this offseason. They have acquired Victor Wembanyama with the first overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and according to some rumors, they also had their eyes on the Los Angeles Lakers star player Austin Reaves.
In the draft, Reaves came as a restricted free agent but he also made it clear that he will be joining the team that offers the most money. Here the 25-year-old player was clearly after some cash. Even though the Spurs were interested in him, they ultimately chose to withdraw for some reason.
Everyone was wondering about the reason why they gave up until Jovan Buha of The Athletic came out to explain why.
“The Spurs, fresh off of having drafted No. 1 pick Victor Wembanyama, considered two offers for Reaves, according to multiple league sources not authorized to speak publicly,” he wrote.
“One for the maximum amount of dollars and years (approximately four years, $100 million) and a smaller, shorter structure (three years, $60 million). In both cases, if the Lakers matched the offer, Reaves’ salary would’ve ballooned for Los Angeles in the third and/or fourth year due to the rule informally known as the Arenas provision.
“Ultimately, L.A.’s insistence that it would match any offer sheet Reaves signed scared off the Spurs and all other potential cap-space suitors.”
Many people made fun of the Lakers for saying they would agree to any money offer for Reaves. People said that the people in charge didn’t keep their feelings hidden and allowed other teams to make their money situation worse without a reason.
But things didn’t go that way in the end. The people in charge at the Lakers did things just right.
Actually, almost everyone in this story got something good. The Lakers got Reaves to join their team. Reaves got $54 million to play for four years and has been enjoying time with his girlfriend a lot. The Spurs still got Wembanyama. It’s like everyone won in this situation.
But imagine if both Wembanyama and Reaves joined the Spurs. What could have happened? We’ll never really know.
