RB Leipzig held Bayern to a draw as Bundesliga resumes
After a two-month-long winter break, Bundesliga resumed as Bayern took on Leipzig on Friday.
The league’s winter break isn’t usually this long but considering they had to accommodate the World Cup, the break was extended. The World Cup in Qatar took a toll on the players due to its harsh temperature. Bayern had been training in Doha during their winter training camp.
It was Choupo-Moting who opened the scoring for Bayern followed by an equalizer from Leipzig defender Marcel Halstenberg. This draw puts Leipzig 3rd in the table with 6-points behind league leaders Bayern.
Julian Nagelsmann said, “After a two-month break there were things we did well and other things we could have done better. We were a bit too hectic in the final third.”
This was the debut of the new Bayern Goalkeeper Yann Sommer who arrived from Monchengladbach to replace the injured Manuel Neuer. However, this was an underwhelming performance from the Swiss Keeper during a lackluster showing from Bayern.
“I was so looking forward to it,” Sommer said. “Of course, a new team, and I’m a new goalkeeper, so it wasn’t always perfect, but it was fun. We’d have liked to have won.”
The trajectory of the match
Bayern had a decent start to the game but couldn’t capitalize on their chances. A shot from Gnabry got deflected and hit the post while a strike from Leon Goretzka was ruled out due to offside.
Later on, it was from a cross from Gnabry that Choupo-Moting put away to open the scoring.
Centre-back Halstenberg equalized just after the half-time break. Soon tension broke out as Bayern players went furious regarding a tackle on Kimmich. While it was Goretzka who was shown a yellow card for over-protesting. Kimmich was the one to blame for careless clearance.
The draw puts Bayern five points ahead of Freiburg who sits second in the table. This season Bayern is chasing a record 11th consecutive Bundesliga title.
