Rachin Ravindra: New Zealand’s Cricket World Cup Sensation Shining Bright

Less than two hours into his very first Cricket World Cup match, Rachin Ravindra found himself thrust into the spotlight by the New Zealand captain. He was tasked with bowling against the defending champions, England, at the world’s largest cricket stadium.

Rachin, a 23-year-old from Wellington, stepped up to the challenge and began bowling his left-arm spin during the 17th over of England’s innings.

In a thrilling moment, England’s aggressive batter, Harry Brook, managed to hit three consecutive boundaries off Rachin’s deliveries – two fours and a six. However, on the last delivery, Brook’s attempted aerial shot ended with a catch by Rachin’s hometown teammate, Devon Conway.

This marked Rachin’s first wicket in an ICC Cricket World Cup. Although he didn’t secure more wickets, he conceded 76 runs during his 10-over spell, which was less than economical.

Rachin’s name, a combination of the renowned Indian cricketers Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar, reflects his parents’ admiration for these cricket legends. In a pre-tournament interview, he revealed, “Back in the day when Mum and Dad were deciding on names, they liked Rahul and Sachin. So they took ‘Ra’ from one and ‘Chin’ from the other and named me Rachin. Two amazing players, and I’m very lucky to be named after them.”

Back on the field in Ahmedabad, Rachin seized another opportunity to shine. With his cricket-loving parents in the stands, he came to bat within the first 10 minutes of New Zealand’s innings. He occupied the position typically held by New Zealand’s prolific batter, Kane Williamson, who was recovering from a knee injury.

Undaunted by the situation and an initial failure to score off the first six balls, the curly-haired left-handed batter launched an attack against England’s fast bowler, Chris Woakes, in the fifth over. From that point on, Rachin hit five sixes and 11 fours, racing to a century in just 82 balls – New Zealand’s fastest World Cup century.

He ended his innings unbeaten at 123 and shared an unbroken partnership of 273 runs with his good friend Conway, who top-scored with 152.

Rachin earned the title of “player of the match” for his one wicket and remarkable 123 runs. His name continued to buzz on social media long after the match concluded.

While Rachin acknowledged his South Indian roots and appreciated the connection with his grandparents in Bangalore (Bengaluru), he emphasized, “I am very proud of my roots and ethnicity, [but] I completely see myself as a Kiwi.”

Rachin is not a newcomer to international cricket, having made his debut in September 2021. He had already been recognized as a promising talent by cricket experts before the World Cup. However, with the world’s attention on the tournament in India, Rachin couldn’t have chosen a better moment to leave his mark, especially in front of his idol, Tendulkar, who closely observed from the stands.
