Preview Wayfinder’s Closed Beta: Fight Against the Darkness with Style

Airship Syndicate and Digital Extremes are teaming up to develop Wayfinder, a co-op MMORPG set in the world of Evenor, which has been devastated by the Gloom. In the game, players become Wayfinders, who can enter the Gloom to try and push it back. Wayfinder is set to release in late 2023, but a short closed beta test gave players a taste of what’s to come.

Gameplay

Wayfinder is a co-op MMORPG with randomly generated dungeons that players can explore, collecting resources and defeating enemies. The game has an expansive overworld where players can gain access to new Lost Zones, which can be accessed repeatedly from the Gloom Gate. The game’s focus on co-op mechanics means that solo players may struggle with some of the more challenging battles.

Characters

Players can choose from one of three characters: Niss, the dagger-wielding arcanist, Silo, the gadget-loving survivalist, or Wingrave, the healing Warmaster. Each character has unique abilities and skills, making them suited for different playstyles.

Powers and Abilities

Players in Wayfinder have special powers, including the Gloom Dagger, which opens doorways to Lost Zones, allowing players to modify challenges and customize what beasts, bosses, and materials they encounter. Defeating beasts and exploring new areas gives players materials that can be used to craft new weapons and gear. Players can also assign points they receive when they level up into Instinct, Discipline, or Focus, which change stats for their character’s health, critical hits, and more.

Graphics and Optimization

Wayfinder’s graphics and steampunk cartoon artwork style are showcased in the game’s world-premiere trailer. However, the game currently suffers from choppy movement and slow transition sequences, which will hopefully be ironed out before release. Additionally, options to prevent motion sickness are limited, which may present a challenge for some players.

Despite some common and generic leveling systems, Wayfinder has the potential to be an amazing MMORPG with its creative and unique surprises, such as the Gloom Gate providing access to Lost Zones with player control. With its focus on co-op mechanics and expansive world, Wayfinder is definitely one to keep on the radar for future games.
