PlayStation Offers Huge Discount on Forspoken Just Two Months After Release
Forspoken, the action role-playing game by Square Enix, has received a significant discount of 33% on all PlayStation editions until the end of March. This comes less than two months after its initial release in January 2022.
Discount Details
The standard edition of Forspoken can now be purchased for $46.89, while the digital deluxe edition is available for $63.69, which is lower than the standard edition’s launch price. However, these offers are only available for the PlayStation version of the game, and not for PC.
Rough Launch
Forspoken’s launch did not go smoothly. The game received negative reviews from the media and faced technical issues, which frustrated fans on both PC and consoles. Its visuals were also criticized for not being up to par with current-gen titles.
Financial Troubles
Square Enix recently announced that Forspoken did not perform well financially. As a result, the game’s developer, Luminous Productions, was closed down, and its staff merged with Square Enix’s internal studios. The PlayStation discount seems to be another indicator of the game’s poor financial performance.
Unfavorable Sales
The president of Square Enix, Yosuke Matsuda, told investors that the sales of Forspoken “have been lackluster.” If the company’s February and March releases do not do well, they may face a considerable downside risk in the earnings of the fiscal year 2023. According to unofficial reports, Square Enix spent over $100 million on the development of Forspoken.
Uncertain Future
Forspoken was not intended to have any post-launch expansions, but its underwhelming performance raises questions about the future of this new IP. The main focus of Square Enix currently is Final Fantasy XVI, the company’s flagship title set to release later this year. It will also be exclusive to PlayStation 5.
Forspoken’s financial performance has not met Square Enix’s expectations, which has resulted in the game receiving a big discount less than two months after its release. The PlayStation discount seems to be another indication of the game’s poor financial performance. The future of Forspoken remains uncertain, while Square Enix focuses on Final Fantasy XVI.
