The Los Angeles Angels confirmed Monday that Phil Nevin will not return as manager. Nevin’s contract ended at the end of the season. Therefore, he was not dismissed. He did not receive a new contract. After a year and a half as manager, he will step down. GM Perry Minasian will conduct a news conference on Tuesday to announce his return as GM.

Nevin, 52, took over as manager midway through the 2022 season after experienced Joe Maddon was fired. As interim manager, he guided the Angels to a 46-60 record, inspiring Los Angeles to award him a one-year extension as well as the formal title.

Unfortunately, Nevin was unable to lead the Angels to their first postseason berth since 2014. He’s now a part of what might be a pivotal summer for the team, highlighted by the likely departure of two-way great Shohei Ohtani via free agency.

Mike Trout, the Angels’ star, recently expressed his support for Nevin receiving a second full season at the helm.

“I love playing for Phil, and I love playing for Phil,” Trout told Sam Blum. “He looks after his men. He only wants what is best for the team. It stinks not to be out there since I know how much Dad cares about us.”

Nevin is the Angels’ fourth manager to be fired since the end of the 2018 season. They fired long-time captain Mike Scioscia in the winter of 2018, Brad Ausmus after the 2019 season, and Maddon, whose availability prompted Ausmus’ fast dismissal last summer. Throughout it all, the Angels have not had a .500 season since 2015, and they have not made the playoffs since 2014.

Nevin had worked as a third-base coach for the San Francisco Giants and the New York Yankees before taking over the Angels. In addition, he played in portions of 12 seasons, with a.270/.343/.472 slash line (114 OPS+) and 15.9 wins above replacement, according to Baseball Reference.
