Penn State Wrestler Aaron Brooks Sparks Controversy with Religious Comments
Over the weekend, Aaron Brooks, a star wrestler for the Penn State Nittany Lions, celebrated his third national championship win in an interview that caused quite a stir. While attributing his athletic success to his Christian faith, Brooks also made disparaging remarks about the Islamic prophet Muhammad, leaving many feeling offended.
In the interview following his NCAA title win on Saturday afternoon, Brooks attributed everything to his Christian faith, saying, “It’s everything. Christ’s resurrection is everything. Not just his life, but his death and resurrection. You can only get that through Him. The Holy Spirit only through Him. No false prophets, no Muhammad, or no anyone else. Only Jesus Christ himself.”
Brooks went on to express gratitude for the platform that God had given him, saying, “I’m blessed. God used me. He gave me this platform for this right here. It’s all for his glory.”
While Brooks likely intended his words to be inspiring and simply share his own faith in the interview, many were angered by his comments toward Muhammad. As the founder and primary prophet of Islam, referring to him as a “false prophet” was considered highly offensive by many.
Despite the backlash, neither Brooks nor Penn State addressed his controversial comments following the match. It remains to be seen whether Brooks will face any repercussions for his statements.
