Patrick Mahomes overcomes an unusual night to lead the Chiefs to a narrow victory over the Jets.
Patrick Mahomes, to be sure, does not sprint like a gazelle. But it doesn’t imply he’s sluggish.
“I move a little better than people think,” Mahomes remarked after the Kansas City Chiefs defeated the New York Jets 23-20 on “Sunday Night Football.”
Instead of his arm, Mahomes utilized his legs to seal the victory, first by converting a third-and-23 in the final minutes by running for 25 up the field (an illegal contact call would have given it an automatic first down anyhow). Later in the drive, instead of scoring a touchdown, he scrambled again and slipped at the 2-yard line.
His decision allowed the Chiefs to run out the clock, as the Jets did not touch the ball after quarterback Zach Wilson fumbled the snap with 7:24 remaining.
It concluded a night of volatility for the Chiefs offense and demonstrated “that you can have two or three quarters where you literally aren’t scoring,” Mahomes said, and still win.
“This is the NFL. “Not everything will be easy,” Mahomes added. “You’ll have to think of new ways to win.” That’s something I’ve learned throughout my career.”
Mahomes completed 18 of 30 passes for 203 yards, one score, and two interceptions. Both interceptions were throws Mahomes should not have made. He said they were indications of his avarice and that the passes should be thrown away rather than ending up in the wrong hands.
Mahomes stated that he was attempting to be flawless by squeezing passes into little openings. He also understands that at this stage in his career, he does not need to be excellent in order for the Chiefs to win.
“You just got to know when you can take those chances,” he stated. “At those points in the game, I can’t do that.”
He found a way to make plays when the Chiefs needed him to. Being a two-time Super Bowl winner and league MVP comes with the territory.
“He’s the best in the business,” said Kansas City center Creed Humphrey. “Those are the explanations. In critical times, he can do things like that.”
Mahomes said he learned the lesson of not requiring a record stat line to walk away a champion as the Chiefs marched to their second Super Bowl triumph of the Mahomes-Andy Reid era last season.
“For me, even though I hate it while it’s happening, I feel like it makes you better in the end – if you win games like this when everything’s not going perfect,” Mahomes stated.
Mahomes and the Chiefs’ lives were made simpler when they scored 17 points in the opening 12 minutes of the game. However, success only lasted through the middle of the game.
“We didn’t play to our level in that second, third quarter,” Mahomes stated. “However, the boys simply kept pushing. It’s not always going to be nice for four quarters, especially when you’re facing a terrific defense like that, as it was last year.”
It’s all about finishing, according to Mahomes.
He accomplished it with his legs on Sunday.
“Maybe one day I’ll get a spy,” Mahomes said, “then I’ll know I made it.”
