Pat McAfee’s $1,000,000 Gift to WVU Children’s Hospital 2 Years Before ESPN Deal
If you’re a big fan of the NFL, you probably know Pat McAfee. He used to be a punter for the Indianapolis Colts, but now he’s more famous for talking about sports on TV after he stopped playing. But recently, he got some negative comments for signing a really huge contract with ESPN that’s worth 85 million dollars!
Even though some people didn’t like the big contract, Pat has also done a lot of nice things to help others. Back in 2021, about two years before he left his FanDuel deal (which was worth 120 million dollars) to sign the ESPN contract, he promised to give 1 million dollars to the WVU Children’s Hospital. People thought that was really amazing.
Generous Gesture: Pat McAfee’s Million-Dollar Donation to Children’s Hospita
Pat has been really nice over the years by giving back to the communities that helped him become who he is today. Many famous people, when they get a lot of money, start buying big things like fancy houses, watches, cars, and more. But Pat did something different. He chose to help his community first, even before spending on himself.
He talked about giving a lot of money to the WVU Children’s Hospital on his show called the ‘Pat McAfee Show’. He said, “I learned about serving the community when I was in Morgantown, West Virginia. My coach, Bill Stewart, always said, ‘give back to the community.’ There’s a Children’s Hospital near the stadium where we played. We used to go there and meet kids who were really brave. So, we’re giving them a million dollars.”
When WVU athletes & special guests visit the hospital they motivate & inspire our patients. It’s beautiful to hear the stories of the impact, even years later, made on those visitors. That’s not all. One time, Pat also gave more than 2 million dollars to his old school, Plum. He helped different sports there like soccer, basketball, lacrosse, wrestling, baseball, football, and high school sports. Now, he’s going to start on ESPN on September 7th, and we can expect him to keep helping his favorite charities. But, recently, some people are not happy about his choice to go to ESPN.
Mixed Reactions as Pat McAfee Signs ESPN Contract
Pat McAfee just signed a new contract with ESPN that will last for 5 years and is worth a lot of money – 85 million dollars! But here’s the interesting part: before this, he was getting paid even more by FanDuel, which was giving him 120 million dollars for 4 years. And he could say whatever he wanted on his show!
So, people are wondering, why did he choose ESPN? Even though Pat said that he and his team will still have control over what they make, fans are worried that working with ESPN might change his show. They liked how it was funny and not controlled before.
But Pat has a good reason for this change. He wants to reach more people and get a bigger audience by being on ESPN. He also mentioned that with ESPN, he won’t have to worry about the behind-the-scenes work, so he can save his time and energy.
Even though Pat explained everything, some fans are calling him a “sell out.” We’ll have to wait and see how this move to ESPN goes for him in the end.
