Paradox Reveals New Game, Life by You, to Compete with The Sims
Paradox Interactive has unveiled a teaser trailer for its upcoming game Life by You, developed by Paradox Tectonic in the US, which is expected to compete with EA’s popular Sims franchise. Led by Rod Humble, the former project leader of The Sims at EA and CEO of Linden Labs, the studio behind Second Life, Paradox Tectonic began working on Life by You in 2019. The trailer, showcasing scenes of people driving around a town, visiting the beach, and using house-building tools, provides a glimpse of what Humble and his team have been creating.
Paradox will reveal more details about Life by You on March 20, 2023, at a separate event featuring game creator Rod Humble.
Paradox’s Past Successes in Genre Expansion
Paradox has had some success in expanding into genres previously dominated by games from EA. For instance, Cities: Skylines, released in 2015, became the dominant city-building game after SimCity’s weak launch in 2013.
A sequel to Cities:
Skylines were also announced at Paradox’s recent show. However, going against The Sims, which has essentially defined the entire genre, could be a different challenge. Although The Sims 4 was released in 2014, it is still being supported with additional DLC and was switched to a free-to-play model last year, making it easily accessible. Additionally, developer Maxis has announced the development of the next Sims game, codenamed Project Rene.
The Challenge of Tackling a Giant Franchise
It will be interesting to see how Paradox and Humble plan to tackle such a massive franchise. Going up against a game that is as popular as The Sims can be daunting, but it’s certainly an exciting time for fans of the genre. With Rod Humble at the helm of the project, the game could bring in new and innovative features to differentiate it from the Sims franchise.
