Packers Coach Matt LaFleur Explains Tough Call on Player’s Birthday

The NFL can be really tough sometimes. On Friday, the Green Bay Packers posted a happy birthday message to their player, Jonathan Garvin, who turned 24 years old. But later that day, they made a difficult decision and let him go from the team.

Packers head coach, Matt LaFleur, talked about this situation on Saturday. He said, “Unfortunately, sometimes it’s time to move on. I understand the timing wasn’t great, being his birthday. But you guys know this business never stops,”

The Packers chose Jonathan Garvin in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He played in 38 games over three seasons and had 32 tackles, 1.5 sacks, and seven hits on the quarterback.

Initially, Garvin played as a defensive end, but in 2022, he switched to being a linebacker. The Packers already have strong linebackers like Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, Justin Hollins, and Lukas Van Ness.

This year’s training camp saw Garvin working with the defensive linemen, perhaps trying out for a spot on the team in a different position. It was likely his last chance to secure a roster spot.

It’s tough to see a player released on his birthday, but the Packers had to make this call as they aim to build the best team possible for the upcoming season. We’ll have to wait and see what’s next for Jonathan Garvin in his football journey.
