Northwestern Takes Action on Pat Fitzgerald Following Hazing Allegations

Northwestern University’s head football coach, Pat Fitzgerald, is currently facing a wave of scrutiny following allegations of hazing within the program. Today, the university administration made an important announcement outlining their actions in light of the situation.

As per ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg, Northwestern has found the allegations to be credible. While they didn’t uncover solid evidence that Fitzgerald or his staff were aware of the misconduct, they did acknowledge missed opportunities to uncover and report the behavior.

Consequently, Northwestern has decided on a series of measures:

  1. Pat Fitzgerald will be serving a two-week unpaid suspension, effective immediately.
  2. Off-campus practices in Kenosha, Wisconsin, will no longer be allowed.
  3. Additional undisclosed actions will be taken to address the issue.

Pat Fitzgerald holds the impressive distinction of being Northwestern’s most successful coach in its entire history. Not only that but he was also recognized as the Big Ten Coach of the Year. It’s important to note that until recently, he boasted the highest winning percentage in the Wildcats’ football legacy spanning over 120 years.

Fitzgerald also responded to the decision of the University saying he is very disappointed with the hazing allegations and will work best for the future of athelets and will take the program to the new heights.

Northwestern has long placed its trust in Fitzgerald, but it is clear that even someone of his stature cannot escape consequences when grave misconduct like hazing comes to light.

It goes without saying that the punishment would have been even more severe had there been evidence indicating Fitzgerald’s knowledge of the hazing and his failure to report it.

As we move forward, Fitzgerald will be navigating a delicate situation in Evanston, where he’ll need to be cautious in the coming months or perhaps even years, as the ripples of this incident continue to be felt.
