The NFL officials gave reasons for why they didn’t eject 49ers LT Trent Williams for throwing a punch at Giants defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson.

During Thursday Night Football, in the first half of the 49ers and the Giants, the camera caught an unusual moment that later created the controversy.

Williams punched the Giants’ defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson on the left side of his facemask. The NFL senior vice president Walt Anderson talked about this incident with the Athletics reporter, Anderson explained,

“When we have a flag thrown on the field for unnecessary roughness, members of the officiating department are able to review available video, Rule 19, to determine if there is a flagrant action that should result in a disqualification.”

According to NFL officials, there is nothing flagrant in the video that caused the player’s disqualification.

He continued, “We ended up looking at the video we had available to us, and we just didn’t see anything that rose to the level of flagrant, which is the standard that we have to apply to disqualify the player.”

Anderson mentioned multiple camera angles created enough doubt about Williams’ closed fist.

Anderson closed the matter by saying that they couldn’t confirm the allegations against Williams. He said,

“We couldn’t confirm that 100 percent from the standpoint of was it truly a closed fist with a strike. We just couldn’t determine that.”

Williams also believed that it was a love tap and he shouldn’t be punished for things like that. Williams said,

“Just mixing it up, man. There are a lot of tempers flaring out there. It’s a competitive game, and sometimes things boil over a little bit.”

San Francisco 49ers defeated the New York /giants 30-12 and moved further into NFL week 4 unbeaten with 3-0.
