NFL Owners to Finalize Lucrative Extension for Commissioner Roger Goodell
Roger Goodell, the 64-year-old commissioner of the National Football League (NFL), may still have a year left in his current contract, but reports indicate that he’s about to secure another lucrative one. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reveals that Goodell and the NFL’s 32 owners are set to finalize a “multi-year contract extension” for the commissioner during the upcoming owners’ meetings in Phoenix.
Goodell has been with the NFL for over four decades since he started as an intern in 1982. He was appointed as the league’s commissioner in August 2006, succeeding Paul Tagliabue, and has since received contract extensions in 2009, 2012, and 2017.
Being the highest-paid commissioner among the four major American sports, Goodell reportedly raked in a staggering $128 million during the 2019-20 and 2020-21 fiscal years. Despite facing numerous controversies throughout his nearly two decades in office, it’s evident that Goodell’s bosses, the league’s owner, have faith in his leadership and are eager to reward him handsomely.
