NFL Considers Major Kickoff Rule Change and Other Proposals for the 2023 Season
The NFL is considering a major change to its kickoff rule as part of its ongoing effort to make the game safer for players. The league’s competition committee is currently discussing a range of potential NFL rule changes, including a proposal that would move all kickoff fair catches to the 25-yard line, regardless of where the player makes the catch, as reported by ESPN’s Kevin Seifert.
This proposal, along with others being considered, would represent a significant shift in the rules governing special team plays. The NFL is seeking to limit kickoff or punt returns, thereby reducing the number of high-speed collisions that players are exposed to. The proposed change to the kickoff rule is similar to one implemented by the league several years ago for kickoffs, and a similar change to the spot of a punt return touchback from the 20-yard line to the 25 is also being considered.
Other proposals under discussion include a suggestion from the Lions for a separate challenge for personal foul penalties, the Texans’ proposal to give replay control over failed fourth-down attempts, and the Eagles’ proposal to eliminate onside kicks in favor of converting a fourth-and-20. The Rams, meanwhile, want to rough the passer penalties to be reviewable, while coaches could be given a third challenge if they win their first two.
While these proposals will be discussed, some suggestions from last year, such as eliminating hip-drop tackling and pushing quarterbacks on sneaks, did not gain any traction. As the NFL continues to balance player safety concerns with the excitement of special teams’ plays, fans will be eagerly awaiting the outcome of these discussions.
