New Zealand Cricket’s Unconventional ODI World Cup Squad Reveal Captivates Fans

Neesham and Trent Boult have made it to the New Zealand squad for the upcoming tournament in India, even though they aren’t on the list of centrally contracted players.

Jimmy Neesham, who played a crucial role in the thrilling 2019 Cricket World Cup final, is part of New Zealand’s 15-man squad this year. He was the one chosen to bat for New Zealand in the Super Over that decided the winner of the last World Cup final against England at Lord’s. The match ended in a tie even after the Super Over, and England won the world title based on the number of boundaries scored.

Despite not being centrally contracted, both Neesham and fast bowler Trent Boult, who also played in that final, were included in the New Zealand squad.

Kane Williamson will lead the New Zealand team, but he’s still recovering from a serious knee injury sustained during the Indian Premier League in April. We don’t yet know when Williamson will be fit to play.

The squad announcement was unique and heartwarming, with players’ kids and partners revealing their names by mentioning their New Zealand cap number and their relationship with the player on social media. This video quickly went viral, with fans calling it “incredible” and “highly creative.”

Williamson and fast bowler Tim Southee will be participating in their fourth World Cups. Spin bowling allrounder Rachin Ravindra, along with Mark Chapman, Devon Conway, Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips, and Will Young, will be making their first appearance in a 50-overs World Cup.

Boult, Matt Henry, and vice-captain Tom Latham will be playing their third World Cups.

Head coach Gary Stead explained, “From Kane and Tim heading to their fourth tournament to the guys selected for the first time, it’s always a very exciting time. There have been some tough decisions, and some players will be disappointed. The key for us was finding the right balance for the squad and making sure we had our bases covered for what is going to be a very competitive tournament.”

New Zealand will have a warm-up match against Pakistan in Hyderabad on Sept. 29 before the tournament officially begins on Oct. 5.
